A CLEETHORPES woman has today been sentenced to nine years in prison in connection with fraud and firearms offences.

Hayley BROWN (41) of Goodwood Lane, Cleethorpes was arrested by Humberside Police Economic Crime Section in November 2009 as an investigation was launched into allegations of fraud and forgery totalling around £1.2 million.

On 26 November 2009 police arrested Hayley BROWN at her home address, as allegations were made to police that a number of people had invested monies ranging from £12,000 to £600,000 to purchase properties or invest in property developments in Turkey. The investigation established that £1.2million was alleged to have been paid to Hayley BROWN in the belief that property purchases/investment would take place.

Following the police investigation it was established that little of the money had actually left the

United Kingdom. Instead it was used in a “Ponzi” type fraud to pay back earlier investors or to fund the lifestyle and spending habits of which Hayley BROWN came accustomed to.

On 24 January 2012, Hayley Brown was charged with a significant number of offences and a trial took place at Leeds Crown Court in January 2014. The trial resulted in Miss BROWN being found guilty of 12 Offences of Fraud and 1 of Forgery.

DC Graham DUNCAN spoke of this investigation: "Myself and the officers who worked on this investigation, for over four years welcome the sentence handed to Miss BROWN at Leeds Crown Court today. This was a complex and detailed investigation undertaken across various jurisdictions by Humberside police. Victims invested large sums of money in the anticipation of purchasing property.

"Several investors were taken on all expense paid trips to Turkey where they would be shown, from a distance, various properties which they believed they had purchased. The Humberside Police investigation involved extensive enquiries throughout the United Kingdom and overseas with the assistance of the Turkish authorities.

"Brown clearly used the funds to support her lifestyle with no consideration as to how her selfish actions would impact on other people, who put their trust in her. The financial and emotional impact on the victims in this case has been considerable and i hope that this sentence brings some closure to them."

IN a totally unrelated incident Hayley BROWN appeared at Grimsby Crown Court on Monday 17 February, for a two day trial, in connection with a firearms incident.

On 04 June 2013, officers executed a search warrant at an address on Goodward Lane, Cleethorpes. During a search of the premises officers recovered numerous items including a canister marked NATO CS Gas and also a box which contained, what appeared to be, a mobile telephone marked Kelin K95. A closer examination of this item confirmed that the Kelin K95 was actually a stun gun.

Police found that when tested the NATO CS Gas canister was found to contain substances capable of potentially incapacitating an individual. Also, the Kelin K95 was found to be charged and in working order and given its appearance would give the impression of being an ordinary mobile phone.

Following her appearance at Grimsby Crown Court Miss BROWN pleaded guilty and this offence was taken into consideration when being sentenced for the fraud offences.
