HOAX CALLS COULD COST LIVES - THINK BEFORE YOU CALL

POLICE would like to remind people of the dangers of making hoax phone calls to the emergency services, after a call made to police resulted in a number of resources being deployed for a lengthy period of time.

When a hoax phone call is made to the police it is not obvious from the outset that call is not genuine. It is for this reason that police have a duty to investigate whatever the incident may be. Those calls can often include assaults, burglary, sudden deaths and concerns for safety.

In recent weeks, across the Southbank, officers have been deployed to incidents which have turned out to be nothing more than a waste of police time and resources.

One of the more recent, and significant, of the hoax calls came into police at 1944hrs on Thursday 20 March. Coastguard alerted police to the fact that there was allegedly a man who was struggling in the water, close to Blundell Park Football Ground, Cleethorpes. The Coastguard, Lifeguard and the Search and Rescue Helicopter from Leconfield, was called upon to help in the search for the alleged man who was in the water.

A number of police officers and PCSOs were sent to the location to help assist in the search and speak to people in the area, who might be able to locate the man. After an almost two hour search and a listen back to the original call, to the Coastguard, it became apparent that this was a hoax incident. The person who made the call is now in the process of being spoken to by police.

This incident is an example of how a large number of resources, have been wasted and deployed to an incident when they could have been required somewhere else. The thoughtless act of the person who made that call is putting the safety of others at risk.

Gone are the days when a 999 call was the only way that people made hoax 999 calls. A number of hoax incidents, which have been reported to police in North Lincolnshire, have come via a text message. Enquiries are underway to now identify the actual user of the phone, as the information police have is not providing them with the correct person.

Police, alongside all other emergencies services, would like to remind people of the importance of not making such calls to distract from other serious incidents. That one hoax call you make, could be at a time when somebody you know is in real need of a police officer, ambulance or the coastguard, and it might well be that  they could not attend as you have just sent them on a wild goose chase.
